01Why it matters
A failing system and a failed system are very different bills
When a septic system starts misbehaving, the assumption is usually the worst one: the drain field is gone and this is going to cost five figures.
Sometimes that is true. Frequently it is not. The same symptoms, slow drains, smells, backing up, wet ground, are produced by a long list of much smaller failures: a blocked effluent filter, a broken outlet baffle, a collapsed inlet tee, a failed pump or float, roots in a line, a crushed pipe under a driveway, or simply a tank that is overdue and carrying over.
Every one of those is a repair rather than a replacement, and the difference in cost is enormous.
The only way to tell them apart is to look, and looking is cheap compared with guessing. We diagnose first, tell you what we found, and quote the repair that addresses it. If the answer genuinely is that the drain field has failed, we will tell you that too, with the evidence.

Parts, labour and reinstatement of the ground. Most component repairs are a single visit.

If the system is genuinely finished, we say so and explain what replacement would involve, rather than selling a repair that buys three months.

Why repair with us
We separate diagnosis from repair. A company that only quotes replacements has no reason to spend an hour finding out whether a fifty dollar filter would have fixed it. Charging for diagnosis as its own job removes that incentive.
We also take the seasonal pattern seriously. In this county, a system that only misbehaves between November and March is telling you something specific: the drain field is being overwhelmed by groundwater rather than by solids. That points at a different set of fixes, including drainage work above the field, and it is a distinction that dry climate troubleshooting simply does not have.
We check the cheap things first. Effluent filters block, and a blocked filter produces alarming symptoms for a very small cost. It is the first thing we pull, and often the last thing anyone else checks.
And when a system is finished, we say so clearly. Repeated patch repairs on a failed drain field are money spent to delay an inevitable replacement, and drawing that out is not a service.

How much does it cost to get a septic tank repair?
It spans a very wide range because the word repair covers everything from cleaning a filter to excavating and replacing a line. Diagnosis first, then a number, is the only honest sequence.
Will homeowners insurance cover septic tank repairs?
Usually not for wear, age or lack of maintenance, which is what causes most failures. Sudden accidental damage is sometimes covered. Read your own policy, and expect a claim to turn on whether the system was maintained.
Can a septic drain field be repaired?
Sometimes. A field that is struggling because of a blocked filter, an overdue tank or surface water can often recover once the cause is removed. A field where the soil itself has been clogged by years of solids carry over usually cannot. Our drain field page covers how to tell.
What are the signs that your septic tank is full?
Slow drains throughout the house, gurgling, smells around the tank or field, and soggy or unusually green grass over the drain field. Backing up indoors is past full.
What is the worst thing for a septic tank?
Wipes, including the ones sold as flushable. After that, grease, and then heavy repeated use of bleach and antibacterial cleaners. All three produce repair calls.
How long does a septic system last?
